On Automated Map Selection Problem in Indoor Navigation for Smart Devices

For outdoor navigation, we use unique and publicly available Google maps. For indoor navigation, we use separate maps which are not available everywhere. A challenging problem in indoor navigation is to find a method to automatically select the appropriate map in a multi-floor building. In this paper, we present a map selection model and assisted algorithms, which uses GPS (satellite number and user location) to detect indoor/outdoor transition and barometer to determine which floor we are at currently. Several scenarios are designed to collect raw data and analyze the character on different floors of the Atwater Kent Laboratory at Worcester Polytechnic Institute. A general solution with optimized parameters is made from the aspect of false alarm and time delay.
